Mayor calls for 2012 public transport use
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has agreed to using London's public transport network alongside the Olympic Route Network during the 2012 Games, following calls by mayor Boris Johnson.
Although the Olympic Route Network is currently being planned in order to allow officials and athletes to travel quickly to venues during the Games, Johnson has also urged the 'Games Family' to use public transport for non-essential trips. Speaking to IOC president Jacques Rogge, Johnson said that the use of public transport for non-essential trips by members of the Games Family would help to reduce delays on the Olympic Route Network.
Johnson said: "It is essential to ensure athletes and officials can travel quickly to their venues with their equipment during the Games. Their arrival in plenty of time and in peak condition is my main priority and our Olympic Route Network will meet those special travel needs." "However, I am extremely grateful for the IOC's commitment to encourage all members of the Games Family to travel on London's excellent and rapidly expanding transport system wherever possible."
