Mayor launches Great Outdoors initiative
A new strategy outlining plans to transform London's public spaces and create new oases across the capital over the next three years has been launched by mayor Boris Johnson.
London's Great Outdoors - A Manifesto for Public Spaces sets out more than 50 projects, including reclaimed green spaces and waterways, that are set to benefit from more than £220m investment during the three-year period.
The document is supported by two additional practical guides - Better Streets and Better Green and Water Spaces - which outline the mayor's main aims for designing improved public spaces. Johnson said: "If you Google our city with a satellite map you will see how the world beneath you is divided into two categories. There is private space - that is, homes and gardens occupied by individuals and their families. However, more than half of the London landscape is shared space including roads, parks, canals, rivers, squares, piazzas, malls and monuments."This shared space is a vast and complex environment in which millions of perfect strangers must move, meet and negotiate. It is, therefore, critical that we invest in them so that London's great outdoors is fit for the future. " The documents have been produced by the Greater London Authority, Design for London, the London Development Agency and Transport for London.
