Melton Mowbray museum gallery opens
Leicestershire County Council (LCC) has officially unveiled a new £1m gallery at a museum in Melton Mowbray.
The council-run Melton Carnegie Museum is now double its former size following work to transform the attraction, which was part-funded with Heritage Lottery Fund support. LCC; Melton Borough Council; and the Friends of Leicester and Leicestershire Museums also contributed towards the project, which incorporates interactive displays.
MarkII and Objectives worked on the main interpretative design of the new gallery, with sub-contractors Surface 3, Audioposts and OMi Interactive also involved with the scheme. The gallery has been designed under the Changing Life in Rural Britain theme and explores how Melton Mowbray residents have adapted to developments.
A study area also provides access to the fox hunting library; photo collections; and archives. LCC chair Peter Osborne said: "The new gallery depicts the fascinating history of the borough in a way that can be enjoyed by everyone and the new study area enables visitors to research their own history and links with the area."
