Merlin unveils Texas attraction plans
A new US$12m (£7.3m, €8.1m) Legoland Discovery Centre (LDC) is to be built at a shopping centre in Grapevine, Texas, US, under new plans unveiled by Merlin Entertainments.
The LDC concept aims to provide children between the ages of three and 12 years old with a range of interactive Lego-based play areas, including a 4D cinema and special party rooms for birthdays. A Miniland exhibit designed to reflect the attraction's location, Lego rides and master classes from a Lego Master Model Builder are also proposed for the Grapevine LDC, which forms part of Merlin's plans to roll out up to four new attractions across the world each year.
Construction work to create the attraction at the Grapevine Mills shopping mall is set to start in June 2010 and is due for completion in March 2011. Models for the LDC will be created at Merlin's studios across the world. Glenn Earlam, managing director of Merlin's Midway Attractions Operating Group, said: "The inclusion of a quality leisure attraction like the LDC will, we believe, deliver significant incremental business to both the mall, and to the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex and greater region as a whole."
In addition to the new Grapevine LDC, Merlin is planning to open similar attractions in Manchester, UK and Xanadu, China to complement existing sites in Chicago, US and Berlin and Duisburg, Germany.
