Mixing youth and history in Historic Scotland
Historic Scotland has launched a Junior Guide Initiative involving local Scottish schools.
Originally piloted at Linlithgow Palace with young guides chosen from Linlithgow Primary School – whose idea it was originally to set up the partnership – the aim of the initiative is to develop sustainable links between pupils and their local Historic Scotland site.
It also provides pupils with the opportunity to take on responsible roles in ‘real’ situations as well as give them the chance to undertake volunteering.
The success of the scheme at Linlithgow was instrumental in developing such partnerships at other sites, with Claypotts Castle Primary School near Dundee, and Doune Primary School (close to Doune Castle) being chosen.
The training of the Primary 6’s began last term and the junior guides will take on tours when they enter Primary 7, after the summer holidays. The pupils are costumed, and act as guides for other school groups who visit the property.
Sue Mitchell, head of education at Historic Scotland, said: “The pupils have all been very keen and committed during training and we are looking forward to them starting at the sites in August.
“It is important that the younger generation gets interested and excited in their past from an early age, and this scheme provides them with that perfect opportunity. We hope to get other schools involved in the future.”
