More than 10 die in Kabul hotel siege
At least ten civilians have died and many more have been injured after three armed men attacked the Hotel Intercontinental in Kabul, Afghanistan.
The attack was followed by a five-hour siege at the 200-bedroom hotel. The siege was ended by a Nato helicopter strike which killed the three gunmen.
Most civilian casualties are reportedly Afghans although at least one Spanish citizen has been confirmed among the dead. Most of the casualties are understood to be hotel workers.
The property has suffered considerable damage from the attack and the resulting fire which has destroyed the roof of the building.
The hotel was originally developed by InterContinental Hotels Group in the 1960s but has had no affiliation to the group since the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 - despite the current owners still using the name.
One of the first international standard hotels in the region, the hotel ihas been fortified and is used as one of the primary conferencing facilities in Kabul since the fall of the Taleban in 2001.
The property was heavily redeveloped in 2005 with investment coming from Dubai-based companies.
