Multi-million pound tourism plan for Redcar
Plans have been revealed for the multi-million pound mixed-use redevelopment of Coatham Enclosure on Redcar’s seafront.
Details of the project by Persimmon Homes – to be branded Coatham Links – are on display until 15 December at the town’s Central Library.
Proposals include a a 1400 sq m visitor centre with a beach observation tower and a leisure centre – to feature a leisure pool, an eight-court sports hall, a tenpin bowling alley, a five-a-side court and a gym.
The visitor centre would also incorporate an exhibition area, café/restaurant and shop, conference facilities, a cinema and performance areas.
Also planned is an extreme sports venue, which would include a large indoor skate arena, a BMX-type cycle arena, a children’s activity centre, a climbing wall and a café.
Elsewhere in the 35-acre development would be a bingo hall, which could possibly see dual use as a casino; a pub/restaurant; a small parade of shops and about 250 homes. New public spaces are also envisaged, to include a promenade and a pedestrian/cycle boulevard and plaza.
Simon Usher, Persimmon’s planning and land manager, said: “Our aim is to create a vibrant leisure destination in Redcar and put the town back on the map as a popular tourist, seaside, visitor and cultural destination.”
He added: “This is not a planning application. We want the public’s views so they can have the opportunity to influence our proposals before we prepare a detailed planning application.” Details: www.redcar-cleveland.gov.uk
