Museum scheme hits funding problems
A scheme to build a new museum in Leeds has reportedly been hit by financial troubles.
£27m had been allocated for the project – which has been funded so far by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Yorkshire Forward and Leeds City Council – but according to the Yorkshire Evening Post, the museum will end up costing more.
The newspaper wrote that the council would not reveal the size of the funding gap due to commercial confidentiality, but “unforeseen circumstances” have been blamed.
A spokesperson for Leeds City Council told Leisure Opportunities that senior councillors would be meeting tomorrow (24 January) to discuss a report pertaining to the shortfall and would not comment until afterwards.
The museum, to be built on the site of the former Civic Theatre, was supposed to open in late 2008.
