Museums making educational progress
A Museum Learning Survey for 2006 conducted by the Museums, Libraries and Archives (MLA) Council has found that more than 86 per cent of museums are being used by educational groups.
A previous study, published in 1994, showed that just 37 per cent of museums made a limited provision for education and 49 per cent offered no educational services at all.
In the 2006 survey, 40 per cent of museums also reported outreach to community groups and 29 per cent reported outreach to older visitors.
Chris Batt, chief executive of the MLA, said, “Museums are putting learning at the heart of everything they do.
"There is some way to go to provide a consistent cultural offer across the country, but museums have made very significant strides towards engaging learners of all ages and background.”
David Lammy, minister for culture, added: “This survey shows museums and galleries are igniting the flames of learning in greater numbers than ever before.
"By supporting the development of learning, they nurture a sense of personal achievement which is essential for every generation.”
A total of 567 museums responded to the 2006 survey.
