Naturist beach to be de-designated
Waveney District Council (WDC) has announced that a naturist beach near Lowestoft, Suffolk, is to be de-designated from 1 November, following a three-month public consultation.
The proposals to de-designate Corton Beach were first unveiled in December, after local residents raised concerns that the available beach space to non-naturists had been severely reduced as a result of coastal erosion over the past 20 years. Nearly 90 per cent of responses to the council's consultation supported the de-designation, but WDC has said that it is also committed to exploring viable alternative sites to accommodate naturists who currently use Corton.
However, the decision to de-designate Corton has been criticised British Naturism. The organisation's eastern representative, Allan Kidney, said: "The figures from the consultation have been used as a referendum of the local people who chose to respond, and the arguments and views of others have counted for very little."
