New Kirkby centre due to open early 2007
Work has started on the new £12m Kirkby Leisure Centre in Knowsley, Merseyside.
The facility will replace the existing Kirkby Sports Centre and the Kirkby Pool, which closed earlier this year because of escalating repair and maintenance costs.
It had been originally planned that the pool would remain open until a handover early in 2007, but major structural problems caused a premature closure.
The new centre will feature a new sports hall, two floodlit artificial pitches, swimming pool and learner pool, athletics track, fitness suite and multi-purpose halls.
John Bell, Knowsley Council’s director for Leisure Services said: “We are delighted that work on the centre is underway – we are continually looking to improve leisure facilities in the borough and it will play a key role in our drive to ensure better health and healthy living for all.” Details: www.knowsley.gov.uk
