New body to represent Welsh rugby regions
Former head of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), David Moffett, has been appointed as the interim chief executive of a new organisation set up to represent the Welsh rugby regions.
Regional Rugby Wales (RRW) has been established in an attempt to develop a stronger partnership between the four clubs – Scarlets, Newport Gwent Dragons, Cardiff Blues and Ospreys – and the game's governing body in Wales. Relations between the WRU and the clubs became strained recently over the issue of releasing players for this autumn's international fixtures, which RRW says is down to a lack of 'well-considered strategic planning'.
Led by Moffett, it is now hoped that RRW will enter into discussions with the WRU with the intention of developing a long-term plan for Welsh rugby. In a statement, Moffett said: "The establishment of Regional Rugby Wales by the four Welsh regions is a highly positive step, and one I am sure the WRU will welcome. The regions have quite rightly recognised that, like other nations, the key to the future success of the game lies in a professional partnership for the overall success of the game."
During his tenure as chief executive of the WRU, Moffett oversaw the regionalisation of Welsh rugby in 2003 with the establishment of five teams. However, he was also in charge when the WRU controversially liquidated one of those teams - Celtic Warriors – in 2004. The WRU has also recently announced plans to establish a new, fifth regional club, most likely in North Wales.
