New deal expands IHG's European pipeline
InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has confirmed that it has expanded its European development pipeline with the addition of 18 hotels across seven countries.
A disused office building in Newcastle will be converted into a 148-room Hotel Indigo property, which is due to open in summer 2012 and will be managed by Sanguine Hospitality. Two further Hotel Indigo sites are to open in Madrid, Spain (spring 2012) and Lisbon, Portugal (early 2014), while Staybridge Suites Edinburgh - a new-build hotel with 121 suites - will open in autumn 2011.
Elsewhere, two Cairn Group-owned properties will open as Holiday Inns in the UK by 2012 - Newcastle Jesmond (October 2010) and Darlington A1 Scotch Corner (spring 2011). A third new Holiday Inn for the UK, owned by Sleeptex, is scheduled to open on London's Commercial Road in early 2012, which will coincide with the launch of a Holiday Inn in Ekaterinburg, Russia.
Other signings include a new Crowne Plaza for Istanbul, Turkey - due to open in early 2011 - and seven Holiday Inn Express properties. Three of the Express-branded sites will be located in the UK. Kirk Kinsell, IHG's president for Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: "As a business, we have continued to invest in the things that we believe make the biggest difference by strengthening our brands, increasing our scale and working more closely than ever with our hotel owners."
