New drive to raise London's food standards
London mayor Boris Johnson has urged restaurants, hotels and caterers across the capital to provide healthier meals using sustainable and British ingredients to help enhance the sector.
The mayor is aiming to drive up food standards ahead of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with one in four London businesses currently selling food.
It is expected 14 million meals will be served during next year's Games across 40 venues in London, with a number of sites having already signed up to the new standards.
London Food chair Rosie Boycott is leading the initiative with the involvement of organisers of the 2012 Games, the government and NHS London.
Johnson said: "We want this to generate a step change in the commercial food sector, providing a boost for our food industry in terms of investment and jobs."
Boycott added: "This work will create an important legacy which will stimulate the market for better quality food."
