New eco-lighting for historic Welsh landmarks
Newport Castle has become one of 16 historic Welsh landmarks to have new environmentally-friendly lighting switched on as part of a bid to reduce carbon emissions.
The light emitting diode (LED) light system, which was launched by heritage minister Alun Ffred Jones on 21 September, is expected to help the sites cut energy consumption by 50 per cent. Newport Castle is the 14th location across Wales to benefit from the lighting project, which was implemented following consultation with the Countryside Council for Wales.
Jones said: "This innovative eco-lighting system, developed and managed by Cadw, allows us to responsibly light up iconic parts of our landscape and also save money. "Newport is the first castle visitors from England to south Wales see as they arrive on the main London to Cardiff train. I am sure that it will grow to be a well loved and indeed iconic image of our country."
