New leisure centre for Australian town
The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) government has revealed plans for the development of a new leisure centre in Gungahlin, which will cater for the town's growing population.
ACT deputy chief minister Andrew Barr said the new complex will incorporate a 50m pool with eight lanes and will be able to accommodate Olympic-standard water polo.
A 25m, four-lane pool for lap swimming and learn-to-swim classes; a large water play area for children; a gym and fitness rooms; and a café will also form part of the facility.
ACT has committed AU$28.7m (£18.8m, EUR22.6m, US$29.8m) towards the new leisure centre, which is scheduled for completion in early 2014. Work is set to begin in August.
Barr said: "Local residents have had an important role during the consultation process that was undertaken to help determine an overall concept for the leisure centre."
