New leisure centre planned for St. Helens
St. Helens Council has given the green light to a new leisure and sports complex to replace an existing, run-down facility.
The £3.2m Queens Park Leisure Centre will comprise a five-lane swimming pool, dry and wet changing rooms, a two-storey gym, a sports hall and a community meeting room.
It will replace the current leisure centre, housed in a 118-year-old building, which includes two swimming pools and sports courts.
A private developer intends to complement the new leisure centre with a new £1.8m soccer centre offering third-generation five-a-side and seven-a-side floodlit synthetic pitches.
The council also plans to spend £500,000 on regenerating Queens Park, where the complex will be located. The proposals include building a new entrance complete with water feature, refurbishing the bowling green and tennis courts, creating teenage and toddler play areas, as well as a general activity area and an off the leash dog exercise area with perimeter fencing.
Leisure investment manager, David Pugh, said: “This follows a two-year detailed investigation and public consultation exercise.
“Queens Park will provide a valuable new sporting facility underpinning the council’s recently launched Active St Helens Strategy. This new facility will make a significant contribution towards getting more people active, improving their health and the well-being of the wider community.” Details: www.sthelens.gov.uk
