New mission for Welsh National Parks
The Institute of Welsh Affairs (IWA) has recommended that national parks in Wales broaden their contribution towards local communities by actively supporting the economy.
A two-year investigative publication called Living With Our Landscape advocates that the Welsh Government "should promote legislation to provide the National Parks and other protected landscape organisations in Wales with a wider socio-economic remit as is the case in Scotland".
In addition to the traditional role of supporting conservation, access and public understanding, the IWA proposes that national parks should also promote farming, tourism, jobs and housing.
This increasingly holistic approach could involve the promotion of initiatives in areas such as renewable energy, woodlands usage, farmer's markets and green transport.
