New music complex planned for Bristol
A £44m music centre for production, presentation and performance is planned for Bristol.
Plans include the extensive redevelopment of the city's Colston Hall and the nearby Colston House. The complex would also include a new building on the Colston House site, which would feature bars and restaurants, education and workshop spaces plus meeting and conference rooms.
'Bristol's music scene is an important cultural and economic factor in the city's life,' said Helen Holland, executive councillor for environment, transport and leisure. 'The council is determined to give it more support through the creation of this facility, something that will also underpin the city's bid to be a Capital of Culture in 2008.'
The project is still at the design and planning stage, and if applications for funding to Bristol City Council and the Arts Council of England are successful, building work is expected to commence during 2004.
