New name for Six Continents retail
Six Continents Retail is to change its name to Mitchells & Butlers when the pub, bar and restaurant division of Six Continents is demerged from the hotel divison in April.
Mitchells & Butlers was founded in 1898 with the merger of two Midlands-based business. In 1961 it merged with Bass to form Bass, Mitchells & Butler , later shortened to Bass. The company was finally renamed Six Continents in 2000 when the brewing business was sold off.
Six Continents chief executive, Tim Clarke, who will head up the demerged pubs division, said: 'Mitchells & Butlers led the way through much of the 20th century in creating pubs with innovative levels of amenity and wide social appeal. It is the ideal choice [of name] for the owner of many of the most famous pubs in the country with a strong portfolio of retail brands.'
