New performance centre for Kent
Plans to build a new performance centre at the University of Kent are expected to go ahead after the university received a £4.5m grant from the Colyer-Fergusson Charitable Trust.
The new Colyer-Fergusson Building will contain rehearsal and performance space and will be built on the Canterbury campus to provide opportunities for music making by students and to facilitate increased involvement by the local community. Funding has also come from the government's Matched Funding Scheme and other donations.
Director of Music Susan Wanless said: "Sir James Colyer-Fergusson was a great supporter of Music at Kent, attending many of our concerts. As a musician himself, he would have been delighted in seeing so many of the University community making music, and clearly appreciated their talent and commitment. "Thanks to the generosity of the Colyer-Fergusson Charitable Trust, we can now build our Music Centre, and successive generations of students will be able to make music in his honour."
