The Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) has announced that a new £3.6m public promenade will provide the missing part of a pedestrian route around Salford and Trafford Quays.

Trafford's quayside will be extended as part of the scheme, which has been handed funding by NWDA and will help to create a 4,700sq m (50,590sq ft) public space in front of Imperial War Museum North. It is anticipated that the new promenade will allow unobstructed waterfront access throughout the Quays for the first time, connecting with a new bridge being built across the Ship Canal opposite the new MediaCityUK site.

The plans form part of a wider strategy to drive economic growth along the river corridor between Manchester Victoria railway station and the Quays, which includes £3bn worth of economic assets. NWDA's executive director for economic development, Mark Hughes, said: "Traditionally, Manchester, Salford and Trafford have developed independently of each other so the links between them can be poor. This new promenade is an important step in creating better connections at a key regional site.

"By establishing a new link this investment will encourage the flow of people and further investment between key employment hubs and visitor attractions, promoting economic growth along the waterfront, and increasing competitiveness." Trafford Council's executive councillor for economic growth, Mike Cornes, added: "The new frontage at the Imperial War Museum North, will provide a much needed connection that will greatly improve the linkages between Trafford and Salford providing even greater opportunities for business and tourism."
