New skatepark to open in Edinburgh
A number of performances by some of Scotland's leading stunt cyclists and skateboarders will mark the official opening of Edinburgh's first skatepark on 8 May.
The facility, which was designed by architects Urban Design Futures in partnership with the Edinburgh Skatepark Project (ESP), was delivered by Clachan Construction and took around nine months to complete. Advice on the design and management of the Saughton Skatepark has been provided by sportscotland, which also invested £131,705 through its Sports Facilities Fund. The City of Edinburgh Council led the project.
The 2,100sq m (22,604sq ft) facility includes jumps, ramps and bowls designed for users of all ages and abilities, as well as beginners areas and competition-standard features. ESP spokesperson Sam Paterson said: "After a long campaign with many disappointments along the way the ESP are delighted that with the Saughton skatepark, the people of Edinburgh finally have a facility truly worthy of a capital city.
"We have received much positive feedback from the user group with many of the more experienced riders stating that the facility is the best in the UK and 'up there' in the wider context of European skateparks."
