New sports facilities database launched
www.activeplaces.com is a newly created web site which will enable the public in England to find information about its nearest sports facilities.
The Leisure Database Company has supplied the information and will manage and maintain the database on behalf of Sport England for their Active Places initiative.
The data will also be used as a tool in the assessment of gaps in sporting provision across the country and priorities for future investment.
Information available will cover sports halls, swimming pools, health and fitness clubs, permanent indoor bowls centres, indoor tennis centres, dry ski slopes, athletics tracks, ice rinks, golf courses, synthetic turf pitches and – from April next year – grass pitches.
Main stakeholders in the Active Places scheme are Sport England and the Big Lottery Fund, who have invested £5m in to project, the teams working with the Department of Culture, Media and Sport throughout the development process.
Professional access to the web site will be offered from September, giving detailed analysis of the data available.
