New urban wetlands to surround Cork's Pairc Ui Chaoimh
Cork City Council (CCC) has appointed OKRA and REDScape to work on the design of a new city park development surrounding the Irish city's Páirc Uí Chaoimh stadium.
It is hoped the project will act as a catalyst in the revitalisation of Cork's Docklands, with an extensive series of urban water gardens and wetland areas to create sustainable parklands.
Urban spaces surrounding Páirc Uí Chaoimh will facilitate GAA supporters on match days, with the GAA's plans to revamp the stadium itself to be integrated into the park design.
The first two phases of the project, costing EUR240,000 (£195,000) have been approved by the city manager and will include the production of an overall landscape masterplan.
OKRA's Boudewijn Almekinders and Patrick McCabe of REDscape said: "We propose to engage with the GAA to integrate their plans into the new park design to ensure permeability and a highly successful park for all its users."
CCC's Pat Ledwidge added: "This proposed regional park will achieve a number of objectives for the city including the provision of a world class modern urban park facility for the citizens of Cork while facilitating the upgrading of Páirc Uí Chaoimh into a high quality modern sport centre which will enhance the match day experience for all involved."
