New £50m tourism initiative drafted for Hadrian’s Wall
Tynedale Council has welcomed a draft strategy for a six-year, £50m project to turn Hadrian’s Wall into a tourism hotspot for visitors from around the world.
The brief for the strategy was to assess the potential of Hadrian’s Wall and provide support towards the continued regeneration of the north of England via incoming tourism growth and revenues. The draft was compiled by consultants representing two north-east England development agencies.
The draft strategy, which began in April 2003, is due to be completed by March 2004. One possibility for increasing tourism revenues is to re-position the central section of Hadrian’s Wall as ‘The Greatest Roman Frontier’ to enlarge the volume of visitors.
Visitor numbers could also be reinforced with sustainable spending and the creation of story centres and orientation points designed to raise visitor awareness of both the Wall’s history and location.
These developments, which are predicted to cost in the region of £50m, could begin in 2006 and currently have a projected completion date of 2010. Details: www.tynedale.gov.uk
