Newham moves to ease stadium cash concerns
Newham Council has reassured local residents that there will be "no impact" on frontline services after supporting West Ham United Football Club's Olympic Stadium bid.
The local authority has agreed to provide a £40m loan to a stadium company established to run the venue, which would then act as the Premier League club's landlord. A council spokesperson said: "Local government finance rules only allow us to borrow for investment so we would not be able to use this for spending on services as this spend would not be repaid.
"The funding we will provide for the stadium is a commercial loan provided on the basis that it will be repaid with interest." It follows reports that the council could be liable for the £40m loan if West Ham United's move to the Olympic Stadium collapsed.
