No more ‘dead-end’ jobs says Kelly
The government has revealed its new Skills White Paper, called Getting on in business, getting on at work, and education and skills secretary Ruth Kelly has promised an end to ‘dead-end jobs’.
The paper covers the next phase of reforms which the government plans to introduce in order to tackle Britain’s skills shortages. These include a new National Employer Training Programme and establishing a number of Skills Academies that will focus on each major sector of the economy and raise the status of vocational education.
While the leisure sector has widely welcomed the new paper, there are some reservations, as Gareth Edwards, operations director of Springboard UK, explained: “There would have to be a serious programme of awareness-raising, especially around employers who are utterly confused about the myriad of qualifications that already exist within every sector.
“Also, while we like the sound of a Skills Academy, there are a couple of further issues surrounding the funding that have yet to be resolved.”
