Oldham Community Leisure Invests in the Young People of Oldham
A 17-year-old boy from the Alt area of Oldham is one of seven new Modern Apprentices taken on by Oldham Community Leisure (OCL), after he impressed during a six-week work placement with the organisation, arranged by Jobcentre Plus.
Thomas Cooper had been struggling to find work since August 2011, despite having an NVQ in Sports Activity Leadership. He was told of the work experience opportunity by his Jobcentre adviser, and started in January. It didn't take long for OCL to realise they had a special candidate on their hands.
Louise McGreal, Head of Human Resources at Oldham Community Leisure, said: “Taking someone on work experience gives us the chance to find out about a potential candidate more than we would from just reading a CV. Tom showed us right from the off how enthusiastic he was, and we were very impressed by his commitment and attitude to work. So when we knew we were looking at taking on some new apprentices, he was encouraged him to apply."
His application was successful and he started his 12-month apprenticeship little more than a week ago.
Minister for Employment, Chris Grayling said: "Getting young people into work is a clear priority for us. Our work experience initiative provides the chance to work in a business and for people to showcase their talents, which can really give you the edge in a tough jobs market. Thomas has clearly made the most of his opportunity."
The seven new Modern Apprentices will join the existing six, who were recruited late last year in a formal training plan which includes a Level 2 qualification in Gym Instruction, BSC Level 1 in Health and Safety, First Aid, Customer Care and Manual Handling training and for those based at a wet site a Level 2 qualification in Pool Plant Operations.
Louise McGreal said: “To have individuals, that at the end of their Apprenticeship, have a great balance of operational qualifications and experience, will put them in an excellent position to be recruited for a more permanent position within the company. All apprentices are offered casual work as a minimum at the end of the scheme and many have remained employed and continue to work and train with OCLL".
