Olympian Tom Daley backs petition for Oldham diving facilities
Olympic star Tom Daley has backed a petition calling on Oldham Council to reconsider plans that would see the town lose its diving facilities.
According to the Manchester Evening News, the council is planning to close down four leisure centres and replace them with two new ones with pools that only reach a maximum depth of 2m - not the 4m required for board and sub-aqua divers.
Those wanting to use such facilities would have to travel to Manchester or Bury instead.
Campaigners against the plans include the Oldham Sub-Aqua Club and Oldham Diving Club, which have accrued 3,000 signatures opposing the plans.
The new town centre facility would include a 25m eight-lane swimming pool, learner pool, indoor bowls hall, 80-station gym suite, two studios and a café.
The Royton facility would have a six lane 25m pool, learner pool, fitness suite and two studios.
Oldham Council will vote on the plans on 22 April.
