Olympic infrastructure projects investigated by Rio City Council
Infrastructure projects built for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio are being investigated for corruption by the city’s council.
Rio de Janeiro City Council has set up a commission to probe a scheme involving state-owned oil company Petrobras and alleged bribes paid to the company by construction firms working on the projects.
According to Associated Press construction companies paid Petrobras “billions of dollars”.
The decision to establish the commission comes shortly after the collapse of a recently-built cycle path which was dubbed as one of the city’s most impressive legacy projects. Two people were killed on the 21 April incident. Commission members will scrutinise the construction of the path as part of their investigations.
The councilman who set up the commission – Jefferson Moura – said the investigation was owed to the taxpayers and was a “victory of transparency”, although he was pessimistic about the choice of president for the commission.
Rio’s mayor, Eduardo Paes of the PMDB party, awarded the two top roles in the commission to party members, sidelining Moura.
Moura said the move meant that the commission “got off to a terrible start” and suggested that the commission’s investigations would “lead to nothing”.
