Olympic participation legacy plans revealed
Sport England and Hugh Robertson, the minister for sport and the Olympics, have unveiled plans to establish a 'mass participation legacy' from the London 2012 Games.
Launched under the Places People Play banner, the £135m scheme is to benefit from the government's plans to restructure the allocation of National Lottery funding post-2012. Sport England will deliver the initiative in partnership with the British Olympic Association and the British Paralympic Association, with the backing of London 2012 organisers and the London 2012 Inspire mark.
Places People Play will help upgrade up to 1,000 sports facilities in the UK; to invest in new multi-sport facilities; and to protect and improve hundreds of playing fields. The scheme will also fund the recruitment and training of 40,000 sports leaders to lead grassroots participation, along two campaigns - Gold Challenge and Sportivate - to entice more people into taking part in sport.
Robertson said: "With more Lottery money being invested in facilities, volunteering and protecting and improving playing fields, there will be opportunities for everyone to get involved."
