Palios resigns from FA
Mark Palios has resigned from his post as the chief executive of the Football Association (FA) but insisted that he had done nothing wrong.
His resignation follows a week of allegations surrounding the FA, Palios and England manager, Sven Göran Eriksson, which have left the FA facing severe public scrutiny.
The News of the World reported that it was offered details of Eriksson’s affair with Faria Alam in exchange for keeping quiet about Palios’ affair with Alam. The paper published his name anyway.
The tabloid deal was reportedly brokered by Colin Gibson, the FA’s director of communications, who has also now offered his resignation.
Palios’ departure now leaves David Davies as the acting chief executive of FA, although the search for a permanent replacement has already begun.
Davies said that normal operations would continue despite the scandal: “No one person is more important than the game we seek to serve and an investigation is going on into how this problem began.
“We have the Community Shield in Cardiff this weekend and we have a huge amount to look forward to.”
In a statement to the media, Palios said: “I am very sad that I feel a resignation is necessary and I do not personally accept that I have been guilty of any wrong doing.
“When I joined the FA it faced many serious challenges. For the time being, I intend to keep any further thoughts to myself.”
