'Patchy' forecast for South West tourism
Tourism businesses in south west England are set to face a challenging 2009 despite the anticipated increase in the number of UK residents holidaying at home, according to new research from South West Tourism (SWT).
In a new report outlining key predictions for the 2009 holiday season, the regional tourist board for south west England warned that visitor numbers could decrease by up to 8 per cent following a poor start to the year. SWT said that consumer confidence and weather conditions were likely to be crucial factors in how the region's industry performs this summer, with some sectors likely to do better than others following a fall in business tourism by up to 20 per cent.
Malcolm Bell, director of SWT, said: "While there is still the potential for 2009 to be a bumper year in terms of visitor numbers, it is very unlikely to be a bumper year in terms of visitor spend. "2009 will be a challenging year and although there are reasons to be optimistic, rather than being overly pessimistic, these are unknown waters."
