Peloton has released a new workout option that moves away from its previous instructor-led content and instead relies on gamification to engage users.

The new Lanebreak workout is a music-based exercise that requires riders to match and sustain their cadence or resistance with on-screen cues.

Users control a wheel-like avatar along a six-lane track and encounter "Moments" that are placed in time with music and sequenced to create the workouts.

Designed specifically for the Peloton Bike and Peloton Bike+, Lanebreak uses a combination of cadence (speed of pedalling) and resistance (added force needed to pedal) as primary inputs to complete the Moments.

The bike's resistance knob is also used to turn the avatar left and right to change between the six lanes, and get into the lane with the upcoming Moment.

To get further to the right resistance lanes, users need to increase resistance.

Lanebreak levels are made up of three core Moments – Beats: blue bars on the track that award points for simply being in the right lane at the right time; Breakers: orange Moments that charge faster by raising the rider's output and award points for completing; and Streams: longer green Moments that require users to keep their cadence within the target range to score points.

Peloton said: "Just like the Peloton library, we plan on keeping the experience fresh and will regularly add more levels.

"Every level is set to a unique playlist of top tracks (just like our Instructor-led Cycling classes) and is designed to follow the flow of on-screen cues and the goal of the workout.

"Riders can choose to take any level on beginner, intermediate, advanced, or expert – changing the resistance ranges of each lane.

"This helps to ensure that Lanebreak is inclusive to all members, regardless of where they are in their fitness journey.

"Between the music genres and the workout intensity, the aim is for there to be something for everyone with Lanebreak."
