Pioneering plan for people with disabilities
A new scheme to help disabled job-seekers within the leisure, hospitality and tourism industries is to launch in Berkshire this month.
Called New Untapped Workforce, the project aims to help people with disabilities gain new skills and convince employers in the leisure sector not to discriminate against disabled staff.
Reading Borough Council has been awarded £278,917 from the European Social Fund for the project, which will cover Reading, Wokingham, Windsor, Maidenhead and Slough and also include opportunities for work placements for people with disabilities.
Running until March 2008, the council believes that, through using the ‘untapped’ resource of disabled workers, recruitment problems can be solved while the needs of the disabled customers – who have an estimated spend of £50bn a year – can also be better met. Details: www.graft.org.uk
