Planning submitted for Basildon Sporting Village
Basildon Renaissance Partnership is set to submit outline planning applications next month for the proposed Basildon Sporting Village project.
In addition to the proposed Sporting Village facility at Gloucester Park, the venture includes mixed-use developments at both Markham Chase and Cranes Farm Road.
The new sporting venue – to replace the existing South Essex Gymnastics Centre at Cranes Farm Road and the indoor sports centre at Markhams Chase – will open at the end of 2010 and may be used as a training camp for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It will include a 50m Olympic-sized swimming pool.
The 1.2-hectare development at Markhams Chase will provide family housing, alongside improved outdoor sports facilities, including replacement changing rooms for outdoor sports, accommodation for four adult teams, retention of the multi-use games area, improved sports pitches and an additional junior pitch.
The 5.3-hectare development at Cranes Farm Road will also offer new housing, in addition to a children’s play park set within 2.5 acres of open space.
Richard Harper, treasurer of the South Essex Gymnastics Club, said: “We are delighted that the project has got to this stage, and we fully support the Sporting Village facility. Our 1,000 members are looking forward to a bright future and hope to make the Sporting Village their home when it opens.”
