Plans revealed for Cairns waterpark
Detailed plans for a new waterpark to be located 12km north of Cairns, Australia, have been submitted to the Cairns Regional Council.
The AUD$30m (US$21m, £14.4m, 15.4m euro) waterpark was originally set to be called Adventure Mountain, but has been renamed Adventure Waters, which CEO Paul Freebody said has 'a stronger synergy with the water park industries'.
The proposed development will include 16 water slides as well as restaurants and cafes, retail outlets and function rooms.
"We have taken our time to get our application to this level and have engaged both local and overseas specialist consultants to ensure all aspects of our application are as good as they can be - and more importantly will hopefully answer most questions that the state and local governments may have on the project," said Freebody.
"It has taken us nearly three years to get to this point and obtain this prize site in the prime location on the tourist strip to the north of Cairns. This was vital to the success of the venture."
Freebody claims the waterpark will benefit from the ability to trade all year round due to hot weather and humidity, plus the restrictions on the use of local beaches because of stinger jellyfish.
The company expects to generate an estimated AUD$11.1m (US$7.7m, £5.3m, 5.7m euro) through entry fees and food, beverage and retail sales and attract approximately 248,500 visitors per year.
"We have taken a very conservative approach to our first couple of years forecast, based on the way the world is feeling at the moment," he said. "But the world will be a different place in 18 months to two years, with a much more positive outlook. However, we are well placed to take advantage of the current climate of competitive pricing in most aspects of the construction phase."
