Poundstock Gildhouse near Bude to be refurbished
The 15th century Poundstock Gildhouse near Bude in Cornwall will be refurbished following a £349,500 award from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
The historic building will be conserved throughout using local materials and the same techniques employed during the original build.
A range of interpretation boards, guided tours, a teachers’ pack and a new website will explain the historical context of the Gildhouse and its many uses over the centuries, bringing the past to life.
Additional facilities will include a new car park and revamped toilets and kitchens.
The HLF manager for the south west, Nerys Watts, said: “The Gildhouse is a wonderful building which has remained largely intact for 500 years. This work will enable essential repair work to be carried out and modern facilities installed, so that it can host community events and exhibitions.”
The Grade I listed Gildhouse is the best preserved late medieval church house in Cornwall. It served as a meeting place for the parish Guilds and a venue for church ales – feasts to raise money for the church building and poor residents – and Poundstock’s annual Revel.
The rise of Puritanism in the 17th century resulted in the building being used as a poorhouse and schoolroom. It has been in continuous parish use ever since.
