With more than 24,000 registrations completed, the Register of Exercise Professionals’ (REPs) membership reflects an accurate picture of the state of the fitness industry.

Following on from the government’s white paper recommendations for working with specialist populations, membership analysis shows some of the following results.

Currently only a quarter of REPs members have qualifications in weight management and less than 19 per cent are qualified to work with older adults – which equates to one REPs instructor to 2,970 older adults.

Just one instructor to every 68,061 member of the public has a qualification in low risk GP referrals, and only 1.5 per cent of members is qualified to work with cardiac rehab patients.

The average age of a REPs member is 31 years old.

Instructors based in Northern Ireland are the youngest at 29 and the oldest are based in the South East of England at a senior 32 years old.

Currently 71.5 per cent of instructors registered with REPs are directly employed, and the other 28.5 per cent are self-employed. The balance between men and women is very even.
