RFU eyes long-term rugby sevens strategy
A number of organisations are set to meet at London's Twickenham Stadium on 22 January to help the Rugby Football Union (RFU) in its bid to develop rugby sevens across England.
Representatives from the Rugby Players Association (RPA), Premier Rugby, Sport England and the International Rugby Board (IRB) will aim to help the RFU to seek ways to build on the potential of rugby sevens from grassroots to elite level. The Sevens Future Landscape conference will include presentations from David Faulkner of England Hockey and Simon Golding of Beach Volleyball, outlining the impact of Olympic inclusion on the sport, as well as the IRB's Steve Griffiths about the global development of the format.
Following the event, the RFU intends to use ideas and issues raised to develop a strategy framework to form part of the IRB's wider bid to grow rugby sevens around the world, as well as complementing its inclusion in the 2016 Olympics. RFU chief executive Francis Baron said: "The inclusion of the game in the Olympics offers a massive opportunity to grow the game of rugby still further in England and globally but this needs to happen in a managed and structured fashion so that it does not conflict with or undermine the wider development of the professional and amateur game.
Terry Burwell, the RFU's director of tournaments and competitions, added: "From a participation perspective there is a huge amount going on at all levels of the game and rugby sevens is played across England most of the year. For many players playing sevens is the way they come into the game and part of how they stay in the game."
