RFU may withdraw 2015 World Cup bid
England may withdraw its bid to host the 2015 Rugby World Cup according to the Rugby Football Union's (RFU) chief executive, Francis Baron.
Baron said that changes to a financial agreement between the International Rugby Board (IRB) and World Cup hosts would make it unlikely that the RFU will make a profit from holding the event in seven years time. The IRB is now asking unions to submit a guaranteed tournament fee as part of the bidding process, having shared profits with host nations in previous tournaments.
Baron also revealed that any bid for the tournament, which has to be submitted in May, will now require government support. "In the current climate, everyone is watching their revenue streams and has to be prudent," said Baron. "The IRB should take that into account and review their terms."
