According to Spanish newspaper Cinco Días, BNP Paribas is leading the sales process

RSG Group is considering the sale of its Spanish clubs, which include more than 40 McFit gyms, five Holmes Place sites and a Sergio Ramos by John Reed fitness club in Madrid.

According to Cinco Días, a Spanish business and finance newspaper, BNP Paribas has been asked to explore the options for a sale, although the matter is thought to be in the very early stages, with no certainty that RSG will proceed.

Following the launch of Sergio Ramos by John Reed in January 2022, RSG Group acquired the five Holmes Place clubs in July that year.

This chain comprises Holmes Place Palacio de Hielo, Holmes Place Montecarmelo, Holmes Place La Moraleja, Holmes Place Balmes and Holmes Place Urquinaona.

The company was focused on building up its Spanish network when former CEO and owner Rainer Schaller died in a plane crash, as confirmed in November 2022.

In December 2022, Hagen Wingertszahn and Dr Jobst Müller-Trimbusch took co-CEO leadership roles with a joint vision focused around strengthened profitability.

“Our goal as the new management is to find the right balance between preserving the roots and further developing the company,” said Wingertszahn, at the time.

“We see it as our greatest task to continue to make RSG Group sustainable, future-proof and centered 360 degrees around the customer. In addition to our core business in Europe, our focus remains on significantly strengthening our presence in the US.”

RSG Group currently operates 21 brands, including Gold’s Gym, McFit, John Reed and Heimat. It was founded in 1997 by the late Rainer Schaller and supports a membership base of over 6m customers across 48 countries.

With a number of operators looking to expand their global footprint, the sale of any parts of the RSG estate would attract significant interest at the right price.
