RSPB reports visitor numbers increase
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has reported a 20 per cent increase in visitor numbers to nature reserves between April and June, compared with the same period last year.
Nearly 500,000 people visited the organisation's sites across the UK, with 22,000 people attending the three-day British Birdwatching Fair at Rutland Water near Oakham - an increase of 14 per cent on 2008 figures. Paul Forecast, the RSPB's head of people engagement, said: "Enjoying spectacular wildlife or a beautiful sunset is priceless. Many of our reserves are free to get into so it's no wonder these ready-made days out are growing in popularity when money is tight.
"And we hope that even more people will enjoy great days out with nature over autumn and winter, with some of the best wildlife spectacles still to come."
