Radical restructure for Scottish Football
Scottish Football is preparing for a radical restructure after 10 clubs in the Scottish Premier League announced the decision to resign from the League in two seasons' time.
The announcement, which was made after a two-hour meeting at Hampden Park on Tuesday (Apr 16), came from 10 of the clubs in the Scottish Premier League, excluding the two biggest clubs, Celtic and Rangers.
The decision comes after the collapse last week of plans to develop a league owned, pay-per-view television station. The plans, which had the backing of the 10 non-Old Firm clubs, were rejected, after Celtic and Rangers denounced the business plan as being too risky. The SPL required an 11-1 majority to proceed.
The decision has driven a substantial wedge between the Old Firm and the other SPL clubs, adding to long standing arguments over the distribution of television and sponsorship money.
It is expected that the remaining clubs will draw up plans for a new league, based around a voting and financial structure which is more similar to the English Premiership. Hearts chairman Chris Robinson said. Any new league at we set up will be founded on fairness in terms of funding.
Both clubs are expected to be invited into the new league, however, since their domination of Scottish football would be essential to securing any future investment.
