Railroad museum announces re-opening date
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum is to reopen to the public 13 November this year after a snowstorm caused damages of around $30m (£15.7m).
More than 100 foundations, including both public and private organisations, have contributed to the Roundhouse Restoration Fund, after a snowstorm caused the museum’s roof to collapse on 17 February last year.
The restoration plans will see the complete rebuilding of all the damaged pieces and funds will also be used to add new pieces to the collection.
The museum opened in its current location in 1953, although some of its collection dates back to the B&O Railroad Company’s exhibition at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago back in 1893.
In 1999, the B&O Railroad Museum joined the Smithsonian Institution’s Affiliates Program, becoming the first railroad museum to become a member.
A number of re-launch festivities are planned for the 40-acre site when the $30m work is complete. Details: www.borail.org
