A host of sporting celebrities including Sir Steve Redgrave helped to formally launch the £15m Middleton Arena in Rochdale last month.

The five-time Olympic Gold Medallist told guests: "You have a wonderful new arena. It's an excellent blend of different kinds of facilities, and just the kind of place that can help make sporting dreams like mine come true."

He was joined at the official opening by 2008 Olympic swimming Silver Medallist Keri-Anne Payne, former Manchester City footballer Tommy Booth, Commonwealth Boxing Champion Matthew Hall and former Paralympic Judo star Simon Jackson.

Mayor, Robin Parker, said: "Throughout the development and building of this arena we never compromised and I am delighted to see the final result, which is exactly what we were aiming for."

Architect Peter Jenkins from BDP added: "From the start we wanted the Middleton Arena to be different and unlike a normal leisure centre. I wanted to give the town something that is really eye catching and iconic, and I think this is a bit special.

"The arena has been designed on multi levels which gives users a clear view of the different facilities, so you can quickly see lots as you walk around. It's very visual, and the big glass wall helps to create a great space in the reception area."

The 7,300sq m (78,600sq ft) arena, which is operated by Rochdale Boroughwide Cultural Trust, Link4Life, has had 200,000 users in its first three months and 3,200 new members have signed up for membership since January.

The facility boasts a 25m swimming pool and separate teaching pool with spectator seating, a four-court sports hall, a 90-station gym with exercise and fitness studios, squash courts and a 500-capacity performance and concert hall.
