Report: Outdoor learning 'benefits wellbeing'
A new study from Estyn has underlined the wellbeing benefits of outdoor learning to young Welsh children, but has stressed that more can still be done to 'fully exploit' its potential.
Estyn inspectors found that in most cases, children pursue tasks for longer periods and with more enthusiasm when outdoors, which helps with physical development and knowledge. Recommendations set out in the report call on local authorities to provide more training for leaders in order to help identify good practice and to challenge shortcomings.
Estyn chief inspector Ann Keane said: "Children generally take pleasure in learning outdoors and enjoy the whole experience. Teachers and support staff recognise the value of learning outdoors. "However, practitioners need be more creative and confident in using the outdoors to develop children's knowledge and skills in all the Areas of Learning."
