Restaurant opens to help train hospitality staff
The student-run Open Kitchen Bar and Restaurant has opened at Hackney Community College in East London as part of efforts to bridge the skills gap ahead of the 2012 Olympics.
The restaurant, located below the London City Hospitality Centre, offers students the opportunity to study NVQ-based courses in customer service, leadership, and management while gaining skills in the work place. Geoff Newton, director of Olympic Opportunities at the London Development Agency, said: "Hospitality and catering is a growth industry that can provide opportunities during the economic downturn. The London City Hospitality Centre will give students an important edge by gaining qualifications and valuable restaurant experience at the same time.
"The centre is on the doorstep to the 2012 Games and we want to ensure that there is a lasting Olympic legacy by helping people to gain the right skills now." The centre plans to train up 600 students by the 2012 Olympics.
