Restoration bill hits York Minster accounts
Increased expenditure on restoration work during the year ending 31 March 2009 has resulted in York Minster reporting a loss of more than £500,000 in its annual accounts.
The historic cathedral's normal operations incurred a deficit of £285,000 compared with a profit of £314,000 during the previous year, while expenditure on the York Minster Revealed scheme totalled £238,000. York Minster said that the Revealed project costs related to the development of detailed plans for a Stage Two application for £10m funding already earmarked by the Heritage Lottery Fund, which has also contributed towards the Stage Two application process.
Restoration of the Minster's East Front - which is not included in the Revealed project - saw a 58 per cent increase in expenditure to nearly £1.1m as part of an overall 17 per cent increase in total maintenance spend on stone and glass to £1.65m. The Dean of York, the Very Reverend Keith Jones, said: "This has been a challenging year for the Minster, as for many people and organisations. It is never good news to have made a deficit, but the figures do show that we have got our priorities right."
